Giving your tired, outdated kitchen a ‘facelift’ is touted by some as a great way to improve your kitchen. It is seen as an economical and environmentally sustainable option, when, in our experience the opposite is actually true. Here’s why…
1. YOU CAN SELL YOUR OLD KITCHEN
Generally, if you think your kitchen is good enough for a face lift, it is good enough to sell. Do your research, check Trade Me for what second hand kitchens are selling for. When an older kitchen is completely removed, it is often in good enough condition to resell.
It is not unusual for our clients to sell their kitchens on Trade Me or Facebook Marketplace for several thousand dollars. There is a good market for second-hand kitchens for rental properties, holiday homes, and sleepouts. This is a more environmentally sustainable option than dumping old bench-tops, drawers and doors. You will get some extra dollars to contribute to the cost of a new kitchen. We have even had clients where a new kitchen has been cheaper than the cost of a kitchen facelift!
2. A KITCHEN FACELIFT REUSES THE CHEAPEST PART OF A KITCHEN
A kitchen facelift reuses the cheapest part of a kitchen. In a kitchen facelift, the cupboard fronts are replaced with new materials. That means the cheapest part of the kitchen is left behind – the basic white joinery boxes – while the most expensive parts of the kitchen are replaced. This creates a false economy, especially because the old joinery can be out of alignment and damaged due to movement over the years (i.e. general house movement, water spillages and earthquakes).
3. KITCHENS FACELIFTS HAVE LIMITED DESIGN POTENTIAL
By keeping your kitchen in its current layout, you are limiting what’s possible in the space. Older kitchens also use outdated design styles and products, so a facelift doesn’t solve the functionality issues (bad use of space, problematic corner cupboards, smaller drawers, non-soft close cupboards and drawers, and joinery that doesn’t go to the ceiling). Kitchen design has come a long way!
4. EXISTING FLOORING CAN BE USED IN A COMPLETE KITCHEN RENOVATION
A new Kitchen can include existing flooring. Don’t let this be the reason you opt for a partial solution like a kitchen facelift, as our skilled designers can work with the flooring you already have. They can arrange for the new kitchen to overlap your existing flooring if needed.
So, why choose a basic kitchen facelift, when you can redesign your whole kitchen!
