How to choose a kitchen colour scheme

Choosing the right colour scheme for your new kitchen is an exciting step in the journey towards creating your dream space! With so many options available, it can be challenging to narrow down the choices and decide the best fit for the whole aesthetic of your home.

Here are some key considerations to guide you:

Flooring

Your kitchen floor serves as the foundation for your colour palette. So you should consider its material and hue when selecting finishes for your cabinets, walls, and countertops. If you have warm toned wood floors, you might opt for cool grey joinery as a statement contrast or if you’ve chosen stone look tiles you might choose a stone benchtop to match.

Your Design Aesthetic

Your kitchen is just one part of your home’s overall design scheme. Take into account the style and colour palette of the other rooms in your house to ensure a seamless transition between spaces. For example, how will the flooring in the kitchen flow into the adjacent spaces? What are some key design elements used throughout the house that can be replicated in the kitchen too? How will the kitchen colour combinations compare, contrast or complement the interior style of your home?

Shape of Space

If your kitchen is tucked away in a corner of your home that lacks natural light it’s helpful to choose a colour scheme that maximises the available space. Brighten up the kitchen with lighter hues to create an illusion of spaciousness. Cleverly positioned lighting fixtures can further enhance this, making the darkest corners appear more spacious. Consider also how the different finishes of the flooring, benchtops and joinery work together. You may wish to create more variation in the surfaces rather than everything being the same colour.

Small kitchens

In smaller kitchens where space is at a minimum, white is your secret weapon. White cabinetry, countertops, and walls can visually expand the space. Making it feel brighter and more spacious. Additionally, white reflects light, bouncing it around the room and banishing shadows, further enhancing the illusion of size.

Texture

Consider both colour and texture when planning the look of your kitchen. For instance, will your joinery have a smooth or textured finish? Will you opt for three-dimensional tiles in the splashback to add further interest? What other design elements can you add in your kitchen space to add further texture – plants perhaps?

Lighting

Consider the impact that lighting will have on your kitchen colour scheme. LED lights can add warmth and ambiance to a space and because LEDs are small and discreet they easy to fit into cabinetry and underneath overhanging bench tops. There are many types of LED lighting including strip lighting, hanging, ceiling downlights and in-cabinet downlights.

Bringing it all together

Collect examples of the colour scheme you are trying to create. Use paint swatches, flooring samples, photos or magazine clippings, brochures or even natural elements like stones or plant leaves. Consider how the colours work together.
